The same work also appears in1005 as the ab urbe Posnani . It appeared in the records of 1236 year as Posnania , and in 1247 as Poznan . In addition to these references, the name of the capital of Wielkopolska came back in 1146 and 1244 as Poznan . With time, the last letter of the name of the city was softened and finally gained its current wording i.e. Poznań.

Historians and linguists have hypothesized that the name of our city comes from the name of the leader of a local Polan tribe, or even the manager of the original castle on the Island Cathedral Island . The real reason is not known but there is a kegend.

Legend[]

It is one of the most famous and oldest legends in Poland.

Well, once upon a time three brothers (fathers of today's Slavic countries) Lech, Czech and Rus decided to split up and go in different directions. Czech went south, Rus east and Lech in the area which is now in Gniezno. After many years Czech and Rus decided to visit Lech. When it was reported that foreign troops were coming. Lech immediately summoned warriors to repel the invasion of suspected enemies. When he just about to fight, he suddenly recognized the brothers, and moment shouted: "poznań", which in their language meant "get to know!"

Happy to be reunited they had a big feast and commemorated the event with a new castle called Poznań.
